Over 60 intriguing letters from a jogi (a
Vaishnavite ascetic) known as Paramhans, Gyanananda or Parshuram describing the
situation in Benaras, describing religious matters,
providing information about British activities, asking for support,
offering internal political and spiritual advice, and panegyrics. It
seems that this Vaishnavite ascetic's original name was Parshuram but he
was also known by his spiritual name, Gyanananda Paramhans. From the
content of the letters, it seems that this ascetic had been involved in
very intriguing and suspicious activities by beguiling both British and
anti-British sides [Whelpton_1991:55.] Hodgson labeled the correspondence 'internal
palace matter'. For similar letters from this and another jogi known as
Paramhans Bodhananda
alias Shambhu
Giri, see [vol 51/07
fol.121-167] . The word
paramahaṃśa is a general term meaning 'ascetic' but could
also be employed as a personal name by those in that category. |
