MSS EUR HODGSON/86 The Limbu texts on ethics and morality, including so-called Lakṣmīsāṃlo 1746
Limbu text related to the teachings of Sirijanga including ethics, morals, cosmology, with three items and including material on Limbu cosmology.
1[vol.86 fol(s)1-18] Old Limbu text on moral teachings and traditional sayings known as mundhum sapla ??? Middle of the eighteenth century (?), about a century older than Hodgson's time Hand-made paper, thickened with home-made glue, traditional pothi or pechya style, fine condition, fair old writing, both sides of the folios used.
Limbu
Text dealing with Limbu moral teaching and philosophy, folios are numbered with Nepali numerals, letter sṛ at the top of every page, Nagari used used on the first page suggests mid-eighteenth century date, believed to be the text of Sirijanga's Khahun or teaching [Chemjong, Kainla and others_VE2059:13].
2[vol.86 fol(s)19-33] Old Limbu text on cosmology and ethics, corruptly known as Lakṣmīsāṃlo, written by Sirijanga (Sri Rupihang Raya?) definitely not from Hodgson's time, a little older than that, may be from around the mid-eighteenth century (?) Hand-made paper, thickened with home-made glue, traditional pothi or pechya style, first or recto of folio 19 is partially faded, bottom edges are effected and brittled by overuse of the manuscript before its acquisition by Hodgson, otherwise fine condition, very fine old writing, ff. 30-33 blank.
Limbu
Old Limbu text on cosmology and ethics, corruptly known as Lakṣmīsāṃlo, written by Sirijanga (1704-1741?), a Limbu monk who devised or revived a script for the Limbu language but was later killed by Sikkimese Tibetan Buddhists as a threat to their authority (see reference [Dhungel_2006c:52-56]). The claim that he undertook his project at the instructions of the third Chogyal of Sikkim (see [van Driem_2001:430]) is implausible because the latter reigned from 1702 to 1716. This manuscript probably dates from Sirijanga’s time or shortly afterwards, and might possibly be in his own hand. Some old Nepali writings on the recto of the first leaf (folio 19) in script similar to that used in the early or mid-eighteenth century, cross reference [vol 88/1 fol.1-10] .
3[vol.86 fol(s)34-41] Old Limbu text on cosmology and moral teachings by Sirijanga also known as Lakṣmīsāṃlo definitely not from Hodgson's time, may be from mid-eighteenth century ? Hand-made paper, thickened with home-made glue, traditional Sanskrit pothi or Tibetan pechya style, deteriorated, major portion of three folios torn out and missing, verso of folio 38 (which was actually the first folio or title page when in the original order) is faded from overuse; title description in Limbu and a couple of Magari letters in an early or mid-eighteenth century style, mostly rough writing.
Limbu
Similar to item 2 but in brief (Limbu moral teachings and sayings). The Limbu writing in this text is definitely from earlier than Hodgson's time, maybe from around the mid-eighteenth century or from Sirijanga's time.
