MSS EUR HODGSON/23 Comparative study of different ethnic languages 1850s
Comparative analysis of different ethnic languages including Horpa, Sogpa or Hor-Sog, Sifanese, ethnic Tibetan, Himalayan, Indo-Chinese and Tamulian, four copies of each, some incomplete but fair and some complete but rough. Includes some personal letters and a list of American vegetable seeds brought to Darjeeling (by Hodgson). For cross reference, see [vol 22/01 fol.1-14] [vol 25/07 fol.1-28] .
1 [vol.23 fol(s)1-153] Comparative analysis of the Horpa, Sogpa, Sifanese, Tibetan, Tamulian and Himalayan languages Machine-made paper, lined and foolscap size, fine condition, fair hands, some corrections and addenda.
English
A fair copy of Hodgson's comparative analysis of the languages mentioned in the title with basic vocabulary presented in alphabetical order up to the words for "mother." The work was evidently not completed and Hodgson himself has left a note stating "Project abandoned and these sheets never published." For similar material, see [vol 22/01 fol.1-14] and [vol 23/02 fol.155] . All these varieties of spellings or words would have a general meaning to identify the Mongol-related language or race. 'Tamulian' is an obsolete term for the pre-Aryan languages of India which are no longer thought to form a single family. Sogpa is perhaps an obsolete name for a dialect of Horpa, a Tibeto-Burman language spoken in Southeastern China. 'Sifanese' is a variant for 'Sifan', the latter being the form used in Hodgson's published work and also the name of an ethnic group in Yunnan.
2 [vol.23 fol(s)155-239] Comparative analysis of Tibetan, Indo-Chinese, Tamulian and Himalayan words Machine-made, foolscap size paper, mostly fine condition, Hodgson's very rough notes with lots of corrections and addenda.
English
A rough but more complete copy of Hodgson's comparative analysis of ethnic languages mentioned in the title covering vocabulary up to the letter W, probably a first draft. For similar and comparative linguistic analysis of these languages, see [vol 22/01 fol.1-14] [vol 23/01 fol.1-153] [vol 23/03-04 fol.240-533] .
3 [vol.23 fol(s)240-389] Comparative analysis of Sifan, Hor-Sog, Tibetan, Indo-Chinese, Tamulian and Himalayan languages, and some personal letters and notes on American vegetable seeds 1855 Machine-made paper of different kinds, quality and sizes, mostly fine condition, Hodgson's very rough notes with lots of corrections and addenda, use of pencil for additional notes and corrections in many places, some letters are torn off.
English
Similar to the language analysis in Item 2 above but comparatively less rough, probably a second improved copy of the study by Hodgson. 'Hor-Sog' is presumably an alternative name for Horpa/Sogpa.
ff. 248-250: Letter from L. N. Hamilton to Hodgson accepting a dinner invitation in Darjeeling (January 1855);
f. 252 (verso): Letter to Hodgson informing him that the writer has been asked by Hamilton to draw a horse for Christmas Day and requesting white cardboard or the thickest drawing paper for this purpose, bottom part of the letter torn off and missing;
f. 251: Hand written copy of a list of David Landreth's American vegetable seeds brought to Darjeeling. Landreth's, established in 1784 and still in business, is America's oldest seed company.
4 [vol.23 fol(s)390-533] Comparative analysis of the Horpa, Sokpa, Sifanese, Tibetan, Indo-Chinese, Tamulian and Himalayan languages Machine-made paper paper of different kinds, qualities and sizes, mostly fine condition, Hodgson's rough writing with lots of corrections and addenda.
English
First draft copy of the analysis of the languages included in Item 1 above [vol 23/01 fol.1-153] .
