MSS EUR HODGSON/17 Genealogy, history (vaṃśāvalis of the Gorkhali and Newar rulers) 1826-1843
Various genealogies (vaṃśāvali) related to Gorkha or Shah rulers and Newar rulers, translated into English from old Nepali, some other historical materials (accounts).
1[vol.17 fol(s)1-167] The "Gorkha Vaṃśāvali" compiled in 1837-1842 1843 Four separate, pre-bound notebooks.
English (translated from Nepali)
The vaṃśāvali Volumes I-III of the Gorkha or Shah rulers compiled at the command of the King of Nepal in 1837-1842 containing an account up to the reign of Pratapsingh Shah (translation in Hodgson's and Campbell's handwriting). For original in Nepali and Hindi, see [vol 51/04 fol.5-107] . Hasrat's published version of the translated chronicle differs somewhat from the original because both this and Hodgson's summary translation end with the account of the reign of Pratapsingh Shah, whereas Hasrat's text continues until the time of Girvanyuddha Bikram Shah so it must have been based either on another, longer version of this chronicle or on a combination of this manuscript and another one. There are numerous other discrepancies between Hasrat's text and Hodgson's original, see [Hasrat_1970:100-167].
2[vol.17 fol(s)168-172] The Gorkha Vaṃśāvali compiled for General Mathbarsingh Thapa 1843 A separate, pre-bound notebook.
English
Hodgson's copy of the vaṃśāvali covering incidents in brief up to the time of Prithvinarayan Shah's first marriage with the daughter of King Hemkarna Sen of Makawanpur. Nepali title Gorkhā Vaṃśāvali on the cover page and some other text inside. This seems to be the English summary of an original chronicle compiled at the instruction of General Mathbarsingh Thapa, see [vol 45/01 fol.a long scroll] . Cross reference [vol 18/4 fol.11-26] , part of which appears to be a longer summary of the same Nepali original.
3[vol.17 fol(s)173-219] The chronicle (vaṃśāvali) of the Newar Kings Volume I, or Account of Nepal according to Buddhist and Brahminical authorities 1826 A separate, pre-bound notebook.
English
An Account of Nepal proper (Kathmandu Valley) with "sacred legends and vaṃśāvali of the Newar Kings" according to Buddhist and Brahminical authorities (Volume II of this appears in Volume 16, see [vol 16/01 and 02 fol.1-105] ). Bikram Jit Hasrat's narrative of Nepal's history from ancient times seems to have been based on this text. Hasrat claims that the author of this chronicle numbered as 'Book 1' is Padmagiri, [Hasrat 1970:viii, lxxxv]. However, there is no mention of this name in the chronicle. For original Nagari versions, cross reference [vol 55/09 fol.31-71][vol 52/02 fol.7-52] .
4[vol.17 fol(s)220-276b] Chronology of Nepal, account of 64 Shiva lingas and the dates of the chief buildings of Bhaktapur and Patan 1843 A separate, pre-bound notebook.
English
Nepali title on the cover page, chronology of the history of the Kathmandu Valley collected from the local chronicles, inscriptions and coins, dates of the major historic buildings of Bhaktapur and Patan.
